Man City and Spurs beat third-division sides to progress in EFL Cup

Huddersfield and Doncaster lost to Premier League heavyweights, but have nothing to be ashamed of

This is how to face those big names, giants - bravely and without fear.

Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers, both currently playing in League One (the third tier of English football hierarchy), lost to Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night in their respective EFL Cup Round of 32 clashes, but they have nothing to be ashamed of.

The Premier League heavyweights had to dig deep to secure victories against the charming minnows. Pep Guardiola's side scored a goal in each half at packed Kirklees Stadium to progress to the next round.

Phil Foden and Savinho scored, as the City boss decided to shake things up a bit and give a couple of reserves a chance.

Foden played a one-two on the edge of the area with Divine Mukasa, went past a couple of defenders, and curled the ball smoothly behind the keeper.

If that opener was nice, then Savinho's was jaw-dropping. It was another remarkable solo effort and proof of quality and individual skills.

Some 200 miles further south, Spurs wrapped up the tie within the opening 17 minutes, with two goals in a very short span.

Doncaster's keeper Ian Lawlor made an unsuccessful clearance with his punch, and the ball dropped to the backtracking Joao Palhinha, whose clever overhead kick put the hosts in front, 1-0.

A few minutes later, Jay McGrath failed to sort out Wilson Odobert's cross as Thomas Frank's men doubled the lead and basically killed the game. Brennan Johnson added another deep in stoppage time, thus sealing the Spurs' victory.
