Maguire points out at United‘s ‘embarrassment‘ after a derby win

Manchester defender scored a winner at Anfield

Against all odds, Manchester United won the big derby game against Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds have a much better team on paper and it was expected that they come out of their own crisis of results with a win here. Even United‘s Roy Keane put it plain and simple before the start: "This is also a great game for Liverpool. After three defeats, you want to play Man Utd. When people start to doubt you, you want to play Man Utd to get things back on track". But eventually his former team not only won at Anfield after nine years, but also made their first back-to-back victories under Ruben Amorim.

And that‘s something which annoyed the match winner Harry Maguire.

"It's embarrassing really. It's not a stat that we should even be speaking about because it is an embarrassing stat to have. Now that's out of the way let's try and make it three wins on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together. The last three or four years we'd put in a performance like this and the following game we come down again. We have set a bench mark, there are a lot of areas we can do more, we were hanging on there and defending for the last 30 minutes or so" said United‘s defender for BBC.

As for the win against Liverpool he had this to say:

"It's been a long-time coming. It's been a tough place for us over recent years. We know how big it is for our fans. We have the cliche of it being 'only three points' but it is more than three points that today. It's massive for our club, for our fans and it is a great memory they are going to have. The lads are buzzing and as cliche as it is we need to build on it now and make sure to take the confidence from it and take the fighting spirit.

United‘s captain Bruno Fernandes had a chance to make it 2-0 in the first half but he missed a sitter. However his assist to Maguire proved crucial for the win.

"It's always good to win games. We know what these kind of games mean for our club and our fans and also for ourselves where we are right now. We know what it means for the fans and the club to play these rivalries. We wanted to do it because it is a long time since the club won at Anfield. It is very important so I am very happy to do it today. We wanted to slow their game and we knew that would give massive spaces around the middle. In the second half we could have played a little bit more on the ball“ said the Portuguese midfielder.
