Newcastle United made an official offer for Kieran Trippier first thing on New Year's Day
There were rumours circling for a while, but now it's official: Newcastle United have made an offer for Atletico Madrid's English international Kieran Trippier. On the morning of the first day of 2022, the relegation-threatened club put the wheels into motion to use some of their owner's unthinkable wealth for strengthening the team.
First through the door at St. James' Park is likely to be Trippier, the 31-year-old England international. The current Atletico Madrid right-back is wanted back in England where he's likely to become Newcastle's best-paid player.

Last season, Trippier won La Liga title with Los Colchoneros and is still playing at a high level. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe had worked with the defender while the pair were both at Burnley nearly a decade ago.
Newcastle United are in a precarious position as they lay second-bottom with just one Premier League win this season. To stand any chance of beating the drop, they must use some of their owners' cash to recruit players who could slot into their starting XI right away. Trippier would certainly be an improvement over current crop of the players who cover the right-back slot for the Magpies: Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo and Jacob Murphy.
Trippier is allegedly keen on the move to Newcastle, especially considering that Howe is set to make him the best-paid player at the club. According to some reports in England, the former Tottenham defender would earn around $200,000 every week at St. James' Park.

Although the fee isn't known, it's believed to be no more than $15 million because Trippier has entered the final six months of his Atletico contract. However, there is a clause in his deal that would activate an automatic one-year extension should he start 20 games for Diego Simeone's side. That's one more reason Howe is keen to complete the deal as soon as possible.
It's January – the time for a mid-season shopping spree!
