German sensation Florian Wirtz marked his competitive debut for Liverpool this past Sunday. Just four minutes into the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace, he set up his team’s first assist, though the Reds ultimately fell short, losing the English Super Cup in a tense penalty shootout (4-5).

However, what captured social media’s attention wasn’t just his on-field contribution, but a quirky detail revealed before the match: Wirtz’s full name appeared on Liverpool’s official lineup as Florian Richard Wirtz.

The revelation of his middle name sparked a wave of excitement among fans online, who were charmed by the Old High German flair. One X user humorously declared, “Florian Wirtz’s middle name is Richard. Give him everything he wants.” Another chimed in ahead of the Palace match: “Florian Richard Wirtz is playing football today, wow.” and yet another simply praised, “Great middle name!”

Richard is a name deeply rooted in English history, famously borne by several kings, the most renowned being Richard the Lionheart.

Interestingly, Wirtz isn’t the only Richard linked with Liverpool—since June 1, 2024, the club’s sporting director has been Scotsman Richard Hughes, overseeing the reigning English champions.
