Lewa's vanity forces him to downplay Kane's scoring form

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 16.03.24. | 16:33

Former Bayern striker is not so keen to see England's captain break his record in Munich

For nearly half a century, Gerd Müller's record for the most goals in a single Bundesliga season stood, until it was surpassed by Robert Lewandowski, and now it seems that the Polish striker may only hold the throne for three years. In the 2020/21 season, Lewandowski reached the "41-goal mark" - one more than Müller - and now he is threatened by current Bayern Munich striker, Harry Kane. The new signing from Tottenham has had a good run this season, scoring 30 goals in 25 matches so far. With nine matches remaining, there is certainly a feeling that the England captain could score 12 more goals to surpass the current Barcelona forward.

And while we are waiting to see if that record will get broken come May, Harry Kane has another one to think of. When he scored a hat-trick against Mainz, he reached an impressive tally of 30 goals in the Bundesliga this season in just 25 matches. Naturally, he leads the league's goal-scoring charts, with his nearest competitor being Serhou Guirassy from Stuttgart with 21 goals. Kane is just one goal away from breaking his personal record for the highest number of goals in a season, as his previous best for Tottenham in the Premier League also stands at 30 goals.

But thousands of kilometers from Munich, Lewandowski sits at home in Barcelona with his vanity and is trying to downplay Keane’s achievement and a possible new record. The Pole isn't exactly thrilled at the prospect of being pushed into second place, so he emphasizes that in the season when he broke the record, he missed five games due to injury, while Kane has been on the field the whole time.

"I see how many goals Harry is scoring and what his numbers look like at the moment. I recently remembered that I scored 41 goals in 29 games that season. That figure is constantly on my mind," emphasizes Lewandowski, recalling the fact that he was sidelined for almost a month three seasons ago. The year before (in the 2019/20 season), the Polish striker played every game and stopped at 35 goals in 34 matches. Then he fell six goals short of Müller's record and seemed to be angry with himself, pushing even harder.

"I broke the record by playing 29 games. I want to be honest and say that I appreciate that achievement even more. I'm proud of it: 41 goals in just 29 games. I looked at the facts more in that context, rather than whether the record would be broken or not."

The former Bayern star can't seem to admit that Kane is in great form.

"The fact is that the season is still ongoing, there are still games to play. It's not an easy task, but Harry is indeed scoring a lot of goals" added Lewandowski, who has scored "only" 19 goals in 38 matches this season across all competitions.
