Lewandowski scored his 40th goal and will look to break the record next week against Augsburg
Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich striker, sometimes known as Lewangoalski, has a new nickname – Legendowski. The Bavarians forward scored his 40th goal in today’s 2-2 draw with Freiburg and made history - he levelled a 40 goals single season Bundesliga record! The 39-years-old record, was held by another Bayern Munich legend, Gerd Muller who scored 40 goals in 1971/72 season. What’s even more impressing about the Lewandowski’s goals is that Muller scored 40 in 34 matches, while Lewa did it in only 28. He also missed five matches through injury, so he sure would have broken the record much earlier.
Everybody knew that Lewa will score in this match, it was not the question of „if“, it was just the question of „when“, and it happened today. Freiburg was a perfect opponent, since the Pole scored 18 in 17 career meetings with them, and the match didn’t have any significance at all, apart from Bayern players wanting to help their team mate to reach the 40 goals mark.

Prior to his record goal, Lewandowski had a big opportunity, but missed the entire goal-frame. And then Lukas Kubler had the clumsy challenge on Muller and VAR review decided it was a penalty. Lewandowski scored, and then pulled up his jersey, with a '4EVER GERD' T-shirt underneath. Bayern’s entire bench, along with the players on the pitch made a guard of honor for Lewandowski.
Lewandowski's reaction to the players and coaches' record-matching tribute is everything!

While everybody celebrated Lewa’s goal, Freiburg equalized. Gulde escaped the attentions of Sule to meet Grifo's superb corner.
Bayern scored two goals in the second half, but one of them was overturned by VAR in the 53rd goal, since Sane was offside before the Gnabry goal. But just a minute later, Sane finally made it 1-2. Christian Gunter equalized for Freiburg in the 81st minute and Lewandowski failed to brake the record and bring his team a victory in this game. The Pole had two great chances, but missed them all. Next week game against lowly Augsburg will be his last chance to break the record, since it is the last round of the Bundesliga.
Gerd Muller finished as the German top flight's leading goal scorer seven times in a Bayern career which spanned from 1964 to 1979. He remains the Bundesliga's most successful striker ever with 365 goals in 427 games. Lewandowski is second on the all-time list with 276/277/278 goals in 349 matches, so breaking another long-standing Muller record could be the next target the Poland captain has in mind.
