The 35-year-old defender will lead his side today against the new Bundesliga champion Bayer Leverkusen. It won't be his swan song though...

The German newspaper Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund's defender Mats Hummels has changed his heart and is now favouring extending his contract for another season.

The 35-year-old's original deal was set to expire at the end of this season. However, he has apparently changed his mind and, instead of retiring, will likely continue for another campaign after initial speculation that he may retire at the end of the season.

There have already been loose discussions between Hummels and sporting director Sebastian Kehl over a contract extension.

Hummels rejoined Dortmund in 2019 from Bayern Munich for €30.5m, having initially left three years earlier.

This season, the veteran has shown that he still possesses the quality to perform for Dortmund despite his age and has kept much younger Niklas Sule out of the starting XI.

Hummels will lead the BVB squad today at Signal Iduna Park as they face newly-crowned Bundesliga champion Bayer Leverkusen in the derby of the round.
