League full of ups and downs... Literally!

During the past decade and a half, the Premier League has popularized the term "yo-yo club" as a universal name for all teams that regularly get promoted and relegated. Associated with various sides, from Leicester City and Norwich City to Burnley and Fulham, this term became a symbol of one EPL era.

However, the past and the current season may have turned the tables, providing us with another phenomenon, still unnamed, though. Namely, for the first time in Premier League history, in two consecutive seasons, the teams which were promoted from the Championship got instantly relegated.

Two years ago, Burnley emerged victorious from the Championship, only to return to England's second tier just a season later. Moreover, the Clarets will play in the Premier League next season, which will be their third "yo-yo" move in a row!

Sheffield United experienced the same fate as Burnley in the 2023/2024 season, though they'll have to fight for a new EPL campaign in the Championship playoffs. Finally, in 2023, Luton Town awaited their return to the top tier after 22 years and were immediately relegated.

At the beginning of the ongoing season, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton joined the English football elite, and none of them will play in the same tier starting next August.

After their title in 2016, the Foxes became a genuine "yo-yo" club and this season, they justified this "flattering accolade." The same goes for Southampton, as the next campaign will be their fifth "levitating" between England's top two flights. Finally, similarly to Luton, the Tractor Boys reached the Premier League after 23 years but didn't spend much time in it.

In the 2025/2026 season, Burnley and Leeds will return to the elite, while Sheffield United, Sunderland, and two more teams will battle in the playoffs for one remaining spot. However, after the experiences from the previous two campaigns, whoever joins the EPL "fellowship" should be worried.
