Lazio vs Milan, Vol. 2 - five days apart, this time in the cup

Reading Time: 2min | Thu. 04.12.25. | 18:17

Less than a week ago, Massimiliano Allegri’s men were better than Lazio with a goal from Rafael Leao — today, a new encounter, this time at the Olimpico

Lazio and AC Milan meet again just five days after their last encounter, this time in the Coppa Italia on Thursday evening. The Serie A clash at San Siro on Saturday ended in disappointment for Lazio, who fell 1-0 thanks to Rafael Leao’s decisive strike, Mike Maignan’s heroics, and a VAR decision that went against the Biancocelesti.

Tempers flared as Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri and Lazio assistant Marco Ianni were both shown the red card for dissent following the referee’s refusal to award a late penalty to Lazio, leaving the visitors empty-handed once more in Lombardy.

Lazio’s only setbacks since September’s Derby della Capitale have come at San Siro, following an earlier defeat to Inter. Maurizio Sarri’s squad, currently eighth in Serie A and ten points behind leaders Milan, had the benefit of skipping the initial rounds of the Coppa Italia thanks to last season’s top-eight finish.

Now, Sarri will aim for a rare triumph over Allegri, whose record in this competition is unmatched, with five Coppa Italia victories to his name.

Milan’s win over Lazio in Serie A not only boosted them to the top of the table alongside reigning champions Napoli, but also kept Inter and Roma on alert. The Rossoneri’s strong start to the season included a successful Derby della Madonnina, with captain Maignan producing crucial saves to preserve Milan’s unbeaten run. With a 13-game streak intact and nine clean sheets so far, Allegri’s side look formidable in the title race.

Free from European commitments following a disappointing finish last season, Milan can focus fully on domestic glory, including their upcoming defense of the Supercoppa Italiana. Lazio, meanwhile, remain without Samuel Gigot, Matteo Cancellieri, Nicolo Rovella, and Danilo Cataldi, though Valentin Castellanos has returned from a seven-week absence.

Allegri is likely to field a near-full-strength squad, even if some attacking options are limited.

Christian Pulisic, who has scored twice in the cup and seven times in ten appearances across all competitions this season, is central to Milan’s attacking threat, though his fitness for Thursday’s fixture remains uncertain.
