Kovač aims to change 0-25 record against Bayern

Former Bavarians coach is coming back to Allianz Arena for the first time since sacking

Niko Kovač took Bayern’s hot seat in a time of turbulence and he failed. When we talk about Bayern and the word ‘failure’, it doesn’t mean that there are no trophies. The Croat was sacked after a thrashing from Eintracht 5-1, but he still managed to win a double crown with the Bavarians. It was basically the relationship with players that got him sacked, but the fans also disapproved of him, even thou he was Bayern’s former player. In fact, Kovač is in the high company of Franz Beckenbauer and Hansi Flick as the only men to have won the Bundesliga with Bayern as a player and coach.

And now he is back at Allianz Arena for the first time since sacking, but this time as Wolfsburg boss. From the 26th of May 2021 until now, the Wolves have changed three coaches and Kovač became the fourth. The club finished in 12th place and is looking to go up the table and compete in European football, as they used to years before. But today, they will face tough competition, as they travel to Munich where they have never won. VfL Wolfsburg has played 25 times at Bayern Munich and has not won 25 times. No other Bundesliga club has played so many home games against another without ever losing (23 wins, two draws).

And yet, despite the strong opponent who showed its power by crushing Eintracht 6-1 on the opening day of the Bundesliga, Bayern’s coach doesn’t believe that Niko Kovač will come to defend.

We trained again this week to see what it's like when an opponent defends more deeply. They’re going to want to play and win. I'm not assuming an open visor, but I'm not assuming a vacuum-packed helmet either" said Julian Nagelsmann.

Former Leipzig boss won’t be able to count on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Leon Goretzka and Sar today as was known before. Wolfsburg are missing Gernhardt and Wind, while Fischer is a question mark due to a calf injury.
