Knockin' on Championship doors - Lookman knocks Sheffield to keep Fulham's hopes alive
Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 20.02.21. | 22:23
Scott Parker's slot secured a maybe crucial home win at Craven Cottage (1-0) against Sheffield United who remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just 11 points from 24 games
This was one small step for young Ademola Lookman of Nigerian origins, but one giant leap for his Fulham in a search for a Premier League surviving mission. Thanks to Lookman's goal in the second half, the home team sealed a victory at Craven Cottage against poor Sheffield Untied who remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just 11 points from 24 games.
Scot Parker's side didn't impress at all, struggling to overpower the league's weakest team, but this victory keeps them as close as three points to Newcastle, the first team above the relegation zone. With lots of rounds still to play, it keeps their hopes alive that the very Magpies would fall down to the second-tier in the English football hierarchy at the end of the season.
After a goalless first half, Lookman managed to unlock the doors of visitors' defence in the 61st minute. Following the slow build-up, he received a long-range pass from Joachim Andersen. As if he was a very experienced striker, Lookman dribbled past two of Sheffield's defenders and smashed it into the far post.
The visitors, with one eye already attached to an inevitable EFL Championship, tried to tie the game, but two or three chances were not enough for them to make a serious impact. Due to severe fouls, a referee decided to add seven minutes of the stoppage time, but as time was running out the only team capable of scoring were Fulham. Only the confusion of their strikers prevented Parker's outfit from doubling the lead, so the 1-0 remained on the scoreboard at the end of the match.
