The Belgian wins the top prize for the second time in a row

In a respective lot, to say the least, Belgian maestro Kevin de Bruyne has been named PFA Men's Footballer of the Year.

To celebrate the 2020-21 campaign, in which City romped to the Premier League title after an outstanding campaign, English football's prestigious award ceremony took place on Sunday evening seeing Citizen's architect victorious.

De Bruyne was the creative engine of Guardiola's side which lead to Premier League success. The 29-year-old has scored six goals and provided 12 assists in 25 appearances while mostly playing a 'false 9' in Pep's unusual system.

Other contenders for the prestigious prize were his team-mates Ilkay Gundogan, Ruben Dias and Phil Foden, accompanied by Bruno Fernandes and Harry Kane.

De Bruyne managed to collect this huge individual accolade for the second time, winning it last year as well - thus joining Cristiano Ronaldo who also had two consecutive PFA POTY trophies.

'The fact that players choose me for this award means I have done really well,' De Bruyne said in a video released by the PFA.

'I am becoming more of a leader on the pitch, off the pitch. I am learning a lot about myself, about the way the team is run and it can only help me for the future,' De Bruyne said in a video released by the PFA.

'You want to win all the trophies with the team and then obviously if you win a trophy like this, this is probably the most important one as an individual trophy in the league.

'To be voted by your competitors who you compete with every game, that says a lot. They are the people, in my view, who know the most about the game and they are trying to get to the best level.

'When you have these things, you can show your kids and say, "Look, this is what daddy did when he was younger".'

De Bruyne and his team did dominate in the domestic league and were even close to conquering European football. However, Kevin had his share of bad luck in the Champions League - his side lost the finals match to Chelsea and he had to leave the pitch earlier after suffering quite a blow in a collision with Chelsea and Germany defender Antonio Rudiger.

The tackle resulted in few minor contusions and fractures on Belgian's face which is why Kevin will most probably miss at least the opening match Belgium has at the Euro 2020.
