Kenyatta University storm University World Cup quarters despite lose to Brazilians

Africa ambassadors in the on going Jinjiang 2023 FISU University World Cup Kenyatta University suffered a 1-2 defeat against Brazil’s Paulista University in a match staged at Jinjiang Economic Development Zone Stadium in China on Tuesday evening.

The varsity boys approached the match on the back of a 4-2 win over University of Split from Croatia despite having one player less and needed a at least a point to advance to the last eight.

In one of the fastest-paced games of the tournament, Kenyatta found themselves behind after only eleven minutes on the clock with precision passing by Paulista led to João Pedro Colares de Oliveira setting up João Vitor Guimaraes for an early lead.

An opportunity to build the lead on a penalty kick came minutes later but Vinicius Soares was thwarted by the efforts of Kenyatta netminder Theophilus Magina who was alert to deflect the attempt off the post.

Kenyatta knotted the match at one nearly 20 minutes into the second half after AFC Leopards Maxwell Otieno’s shot was blocked but saw the ball land on the foot of teammate Michael Amwayi who fired it past Paulista keeper Diego Rodrigues Silva.

Orangi under pressure to arrest MCF’s poor start

Despite Kenyatta’s wide attacking style that pressed the Brazilians, it was Paulista’s Luan Carvalho de Lima who burst past his defender and on a two-on-one set up Matheus Soares Mascimento for the game winner.

With the win Paulista took control Group B with four points, while Kenyatta came second with three booking a place in the quarter finals after Split failed to record a win in their match, and await to know their last eight opponents in a draw slated for Wednesday afternoon.
