Round one games will begin on Saturday 15 October

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama might have sealed his place in the 2022 Major League Soccer (MLS) Playoffs with his CF Montreal side, but the midfielder will not be the only Kenyan hoping to clinch the MLS Cup, the league's championship game, as two other Kenyan players will join him in that race.

Harambee Stars defensive midfielder Richard Odada and Defender Nabilai Kibunguchy will be the two other Kenyan players joining the former Tottenham Hotspur player.

Just like Wanyama, Odada qualified to the MLS Playoffs from the Eastern Conference as his Philadelphia Union topped the table on 67 points, two ahead of Wanyama’s second-placed Montreal.

On the other hand, Kibunguchy was the only Kenyan from the Western Conference as his Minnesota United side finished in sixth place, just inside the allowed top seven positions from each side.

The MLS Cup Playoffs is the annual post-season elimination tournament of Major League Soccer (MLS). The final match of the tournament is the MLS Cup which is the league's championship game.

Under the current format adopted for the 2019 season, 14 teams qualify for the tournament based on regular-season point totals—the seven highest-placed teams from both the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

The teams ranked 2nd through 7th in each conference compete in the First Round, with the winners advancing to the Conference Semifinals along with the 1st seed who is given a bye. Winners of that round play in the Conference Finals which is then followed by MLS Cup.

Odada’s Philadelphia Union has already been assured of a semifinal spot after topping the Eastern Conference league table. The same applies to Western Conference leaders Los Angeles FC.

Other teams that will be taking part include New York Red Bulls, FC Cincinnati, New York City, Inter Miami, Orlando City, Los Angeles Galaxy, Nashville SC, FC Dallas, Austin FC and Real Salt Lake.

Round one games will begin on Saturday, October 15.
