The 17-year-old German winger, who is eligible for Harambee Stars, made his first big move, which is away from his hometown of Berlin.
Akumu’s move was confirmed by his new club on Wednesday, 13 August.
“FC signs attacking talent from Berlin. The FC has signed Maik Afri Akumu from Hertha BSC. The 17-year-old attacking talent is moving from the capital to Geibockheim and signed a long-term contract with the FC on Wednesday.
Warm welcome to the Cologne, Maik,” Koln posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
In a separate post, Maik’s previous club also confirmed the exit of the rising star.
“The talent Maik Afri Akumu (17) is leaving Berlin and joining 1.FC Koln. Spicy: His advisor is none other than the former Hertha star Kevin-Prince Boateng (38)," posted Hertha Berlin.
Boateng, a former Ghana international who was born and bred in Germany, is one of the African stars who represented the Black Stars in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups in South Africa and Brazil, respectively.
The fleet-footed winger will join another Kenyan prospect in Koln, Linton Maina, who earned promotion to the Bundesliga with the side last season and signed a new contract during the summer.
Akumu, on his part, was born in Berlin, Germany, in 2008 to a Kenyan father and an English mother, but is currently a dual citizen of Germany and Poland.
The Koln player is a left winger who can also slot in the right wing as well as a centre forward and measures 184cm, a good height for his playing position.
The teenage sensation has grown and risen through the ranks of Hertha and has gone ahead to play for the club in the U17, U19 and U21 teams.
For his troubles, Akumu has earned call-ups to the German junior sides and has already featured for the country thrice at the U17 level and famously scored an 86th-minute winner in their 2-1 victory over Portugal on Saturday, 11 January.
Should FKF pursue the possibility of bringing Akumu on board to represent his father's country of birth, he will undoubtedly bolster the ranks of the Kenyan squad.
