Phillipp Mwene has made a triumphant return to FSV Mainz 05. The seasoned defender, who left Mainz for a stint at PSV Eindhoven two years ago, has rekindled his connection with the German club, inking a contract that will keep him at Bruchweg until 2026
Austrian international Phillipp Mwene has re-signed with 1. FSV Mainz 05, marking a significant development in his career. Mwene, who departed Mainz for PSV Eindhoven two years ago, has rejoined the club on a contract that extends until 2026.
During his tenure at PSV, Mwene showcased his skills in 73 competitive matches, contributing five goals and two crucial assists. His European endeavors included appearances in eight Champions League qualifiers, 13 Europa League matches, and one Conference League game. Notably, Mwene secured the Dutch Cup twice and the Super Cup thrice during his time with PSV.
Mainz 05 Sporting Director Christian Heidel expressed satisfaction with the signing, highlighting Mwene's alignment with the team's style and values. "In Phillipp Mwene we are gaining a player who we know well and who is an excellent match for us both in terms of sport and personality, so we have worked long and patiently on this signing," noted Heidel.
Head Coach Bo Svensson echoed this sentiment, underscoring the club's persistence in securing Mwene's return. "We fought for Phillipp for a long time, so we're very happy that it finally worked out and he's coming back to us at Bruchweg," Svensson stated. He emphasized Mwene's familiarity with the club's tactics and praised his technical versatility.
Mwene himself expressed his enthusiasm for reuniting with Mainz 05. "For me, it feels like coming home," Mwene shared. He conveyed excitement about playing for the Bundesliga team again, underlining his anticipation of contributing to the team's progress. "I've been following Mainz 05 the whole time; the club has made great progress over the past few years, which is far from over. It's great that we're going to take the next steps together."
Mwene is born to a Kenyan father and Austrian mother. He is not elligible to play for Harambee Stars as he has already represented Austria at the senior international level.
