Kenyan Deaflympics team receives Ksh 1 Million boost from Safaricom

The tournament will produce the continent's representatives at the 24th Deaflympics Games in Brazil next year

Kenya's team at the ongoing Africa Deaf Ball Games Qualifiers have received a shot in the arm from telecommunications giant Safaricom who have sponsored them to a tune of 1 million Kenya Shillings.

According to a circular from the sponsors, the deal will cater for the players’ kits and airtime during the tournament.

"Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has announced KES 1 million support for the Kenyan team representing the country at the ongoing Deaflympics Ball Games Qualifiers. The sponsorship covers the players’ kits and airtime during the ball games which are the first-ever Deaflympics Qualifiers to be held in Kenya since its inception in 1924," part of the statement read.

Two games have already been played with Kenya falling 3-1 to Senegal and Egypt thumping Somaliland 10-1 and more action is expected to continue this week with more exciting games lined up.

The official ceremony of the competition that will produce the continent's representatives at the 24th Summer Deaflympic Games in May next year was presided over by the Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed at Kasarani Stadium yesterday.

Kenya already kick-started their men's football campaign albeit on a 3-1 loss to Senegal and will; be hoping to bounce back when they play Mali next in Group A.

In addition to the men's football team, Kenya is among the only three African countries that have a representative in Women's football in the competition.

This year, Safaricom has also supported the Kenyan Olympic and Paralympic teams as well as sponsoring the just concluded World Athletics Under 20 Championships and the upcoming Kip Keino Classic, the final meeting of this year’s World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series.
