Leyton Orient has confirmed that 20-year-old midfielder Zech Obiero has signed a new contract with the club, keeping him at Brisbane Road until the summer of 2028, with an option for an additional year.

He is the son of former Gor Mahia player Aggrey Obonyo.

Obiero, who earned a call-up to the Kenya U20 national team for the AFCON earlier this year in Egypt but did not make the final squad, expressed his delight and gratitude for the club’s continued faith in him.

“I am really happy to have signed a new contract. Leyton Orient means a lot to me, and I am grateful to the club for showing faith in me. My goal is to become established in our first team and I am doing everything I can to make that happen. I trust the gaffer and the staff here; they have a great record of improving players and they are constantly giving me advice to help me improve.”

Reflecting on his journey since joining Leyton Orient at 16 from the Tottenham Hotspur Academy- and making his senior debut in April 2022, Obiero highlighted the importance of patience and fan support.

“It is really important to trust the process with my journey here; I’m hungry and determined to succeed, and the encouragement I get from the fans plays a big part in that. I love to show my appreciation for them when I can.”

Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens weighed in on Obiero’s potential, praising his development and attitude.

“Zech is a player I rate highly, and we are very aware of his potential. He has shown his ability in flashes throughout his time here and we know what he can bring. He is still a very young player who needs to learn the unseen sides of the game, but if he carries on progressing and taking the information on board that we give him, there is no doubt in my mind that he can achieve his potential and become a big part of our team.”

Director of Football Martin Ling added further insight on Obiero’s future, noting the importance of regular senior football.

“We all believe that Zech can have a big future in the game and we’re really pleased that he’s agreed his new contract. He had a taste of regular first-team football at the beginning of last season, but he’s had to be patient since then.

That’s the next step for Zech; to be playing regularly in senior football again, whether that is here or out on loan. We believe that once he starts playing regularly, he can develop into the top player we know he can be. Zech has a great personality and a willingness to learn, he trusts the gaffer and his staff, and that will only improve his chances of unlocking his potential.”

Obiero’s new contract is subject to FA and EFL approval.
