Speaking during a benchmarking visit to Morocco, Mwangi said East Africa is ready to deliver a world-class tournament that will leave a lasting impression.
“We welcome the entire African continent, all sportsmen and sportswomen, and fans from across the globe. We are committed to making this event bigger and better than CHAN and even Morocco. Karibuni, Kenya,” Mwangi said.
The 2027 AFCON will be the first to be co-hosted by three countries and the first in East Africa in nearly five decades, since Ethiopia hosted in 1976. The joint hosting underscores the region’s growing prominence in continental football.
Mwangi was part of the ‘Pamoja’ delegation that received the AFCON flag after Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat, officially confirming Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as hosts.
“All hands are on deck to ensure the success of the tournament. We have the infrastructure, amenities, and teams required to deliver a top-tier event,” he said, citing the experience gained from the 2025 African Nations Championships (CHAN) as a foundation for preparation.
During the visit, Mwangi highlighted Morocco’s advanced stadiums as benchmarks for East Africa and confirmed that local projects, including the Talanta Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies, are progressing on schedule. He emphasized the government’s commitment to meeting international standards ahead of the tournament.
Concerns about road networks and other infrastructure in the region have been dismissed by Mwangi, who insisted that the three countries are fully prepared to host the continental competition. CAF President Patrice Motsepe also defended the decision, stating that limiting tournaments to established football nations would hinder development across the continent.
Scheduled for June and July 2027, the tournament will provide East Africa with a platform to showcase its culture, hospitality, and sporting facilities to millions of fans worldwide. Mwangi concluded,
“This is a historic opportunity to demonstrate what East Africa can achieve. We are ready to host a spectacular event.”
