The Bankers go into the match placed seventh on the table with 22 points from 15 matches. Nairobi United, popularly known as the Naibois, sit 11th with 20 points from 13 games.
Victory for the Bankers would propel them up to third on the standings, while a win for Nairobi United would see them climb to seventh, with a game in hand and their abandoned fixture against Gor Mahia still pending.
Both sides are winless in their last two outings. KCB suffered a 3–1 defeat to Shabana FC before settling for a goalless draw against Kenya Police FC. Nairobi United, meanwhile, lost 2–0 to AFC Leopards and then drew 1–1 with Ulinzi Stars.
The two teams last met in the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16 last season, where Nairobi United edged KCB 6–5 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular time, an outcome that underlines how closely contested today’s league clash could be.
Both clubs will be without their head coaches for this match. KCB head coach Robert Matano is expected to miss the game following the passing of his wife earlier this week. Nairobi United, on the other hand, are in transition after losing coach Nicholas Muyoti to Kenya Police FC, with technical director Salim Ali set to take charge as the club works towards appointing a new head coach for Kenya’s CAF Confederation Cup representatives.
January has seen both teams strengthen their squads. KCB have added Bandari forward David Sakwa, veteran midfielder Francis Kahata, and defender Vincent Okello from Sofapaka. Nairobi United have bolstered their ranks with local signings Roy Okal (Sofapaka), winger John Njuguna (formerly of Tusker), and defender Steve Biko, from Kariobangi Sharks. They have also brought in Ugandans Titus Ssematimba and Mustafa Kizza, alongside Rwandan midfielder Muhadjiri Hakizimana.
Statistically, the two sides are evenly matched. Both have scored 16 league goals this season, with KCB conceding 14 and Nairobi United 15.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 PM.
