Mathare United head coach John Kamau has lifted the lid on the tactical approach that inspired his side’s crucial 1–0 victory over Shabana FC in Sunday’s, 26 October FKF Premier League clash at the Gusii Stadium.

The Slum Boys stunned the Kisii-based outfit 1-0 courtesy of a thunderous strike from former Shabana forward Dennis Okoth.

The result secured their second win of the campaign and further, lifted the former champions to fifth position on the log, level on seven points with Shabana and Bidco United.

Speaking after the match, Kamau disclosed that a diamond formation and exploiting defensive blind sides formed the backbone of his game plan, especially in the absence of holding midfielder Brian Ochieng, who missed a second consecutive fixture through injury.

The former Posta Rangers coach was spoilt for choice on which department to praise after the match, noting that his keeper Brian Ouru staged a gallant display between the sticks, whilst the rest of the squad showed character to soak in Shabana's pressure and secure the win.

"It was not easy, but I have mixed reactions because first, my goalkeeper did an excellent job, even extra work, and the team showed great character to contain Shabana’s direct play," Kamau told Azam TV.“

"Missing Brian Ochieng forced us to adapt. In the second half, we switched to a diamond formation to balance attack and defence, since we didn’t have a natural defensive midfielder. It was about teamwork and tactical discipline,” he added.

The experienced tactician further revealed that Mathare had spent the week fine-tuning their ability to capitalize on opponents’ defensive blind sides, an area he believes many FKF Premier League teams rarely guard effectively.

"We have to be clinical. The goal we scored came from something we worked on before the match, exploiting the defensive blind side. Most teams leave that space unmarked, and I’m glad the players executed it perfectly, "he added.

Mathare United will next face another stern test on Thursday, 30 October, when they lock horns with record champions Gor Mahia.
