Everyone knew he'd be leaving the Gunners, but the Brazilian's contract at the Emirates was about to expire on June 30

Jorginho's two-and-a-half-year-long spell at Arsenal, embellished with 78 appearances, has come to an official end as he joins Brazilian giants Flamengo.

The 33-year-old midfielder was introduced as a new Flamengo player to media and public in his homeland on Friday.

Interestingly, Jorginho's contract with the Gunners was about to expire on June 30, and the initial idea was that he would join Flamengo then as a free agent.

However, because Flamengo are about to play at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, the North Londoners agreed with the player to mutually terminate the contract almost a month before the expiry.

The EPL side said they had "reached a mutual agreement with Jorginho to end his contract with immediate effect".

"Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Jorgi for his contribution to the club and we wish him and his family all the best for the future," said the Gunners.

Before Arsenal, Jorginho played for Chelsea, coming from Napoli in 2018. While at the Stamford Bridge, he won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
