Arsenal sale starts with an experienced midfielder

The Brazilian is going to his country of origin and will play at the FIFA's Club World Cup

It had been known for several months that Jorginho would leave Arsenal and, for the first time in his career, play in the country of his birth. Flamengo offered, experienced midfielder accepted, and the Gunners had no objection to the former Chelsea and Napoli player changing clubs, especially with changes to their squad already on the horizon. Now it’s all officially confirmed — Jorginho will sign a three-year contract worth 13 million euros on Friday.

This will make him the highest-paid player at the legendary Maracana club. Until now, that title belonged to Uruguayan Giorgian De Arrascaeta, whose annual salary was 2.2 million. Jorginho will earn around four million euros per year. He is expected to make his debut at the FIFA Club World Cup, where Flamengo is grouped with Tunisia’s Esperance, Chelsea, and Los Angeles FC.

The recently concluded season was one to forget for Jorginho. Not only did Arsenal once again fail to win any trophies — despite investing 108 million in three new players — but the experienced midfielder suffered a punctured lung during a match against Brentford, which sidelined him longer than expected. And even when he did play, he was only a shadow of the player he once was at Chelsea. That’s why his departure was inevitable, and it seems that a move to Brazil could be the revival his career needs — just like many others who returned to the land of samba and rediscovered their footballing rhythm. Despite being veterans, they’ve demonstrated class above the rest. So now, the boy who was nicknamed "Hadzinho" as a kid — because his idol was Gheorghe Hagi — will finally have the chance to show his magic where it is most appreciated.
