Johanna Omolo is now a free agent after being released by Erzurumspor.

Kenyan international Johanna Omolo is now a free agent after being released by his Turkish side Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor following relegation from the Turkish Super Lig.

The former Cercle Brugge midfielder is part of the nine players who were axed by the club including Arvydas Novikovas, Petrus Boumal, Adolphe Teikeu, Jakub Szumski, Elba Rashani, Leo Schwechlen, Zakarya Bergdich and Brahim Darri.

According to reports from Turkey, the players who joined the club this season had a clause inserted in their contract that would see them rendered free agents should the club suffer relegation.

“These players joined BB Erzurumspor this season and had a contract that would see their contract terminated should the club suffer relegation,” read reports from Turkey.

Omolo joined Erzurumspor in the mid-season transfer window from Belgium outfit Cercle Brugge as the club beefed up their squad in a bid to extend their stay in the top flight.

The 31-year-old could make a return to Belgium where he has spent all his professional club football save a short loan stint to Luxemburg.

Reports also suggest that Mitchell Donald, Arturo Mina, Fabien Farnolle, Armando Sadiku, Aatif Chahechouhe, Mostapha El Kabir, Yaw Ackah and Manuel da Costa have also been shown the door at the club.

Erzurumspor suffered relegation by the barest of margins after finishing 18th in the 21-team log and only needed a point to survive as they finished the season with 40 points from 40 games.

The club was founded back in 2010 and have suffered relegation from the top flight on two occasions back in 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 following successive promotions from amateur football.
