Shabana FC winger James Mazembe has explained the significance of the team's first win of the season at the expense of Kenya Police FC.

The Glamour Boys welcomed the Law Enforcers at their Gusii Stadium backyard on Sunday 10 November and claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory courtesy of a first-half goal from Vincent Nyabuto who met James Mazembe’s cross with a powerful header.

This was not only the first win for the Glamour Boys this season but also the first goal they scored at Gusii Stadium since their return to top-flight football after 18 years.

The former Kariobangi Sharks midfielder was happy with his contribution to the win and also explained the importance of the victory going forward.

“I am happy that I made a mark when called upon with the assist. The most important thing though is that the team won, the first of the season which I'm sure will give us confidence going forward.

The self-belief in our abilities will allow us to express ourselves and the win also reduces the pressure on the team which I hope will work to our advantage,” said Mazembe.

The former KCB FC man also expressed his admiration for the will of the team to get positive results.

“I am glad with the overall team performance. It was a tough match but we showed character and resilience to win the match,” he stated.

The Kakamega High School alumnus joined Shabana during the off-season transfer window and experienced a start that he did not anticipate.

He was used sparingly by coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo, mostly watching the entire match from the bench or terraces. He shared with Mozzart Sport the experience.

“It has been a very difficult period for me, not one that I anticipated when I came here but nevertheless, it is part of football and I had to endure that,” he said.

However, for the Kericho-born and bred winger, the team's tribulations were more concerning than personal gratification

“I am maybe one of the more experienced players in the team and so I had to keep the team spirit, push hard and support my teammates even if things were not good for me individually,” he concluded.

Shabana's next match will be on Saturday 23 November against rivals Murang'a Seal after the international break.
