Legendary United's keeper Schmeichel also criticized the club's transfer signing decision
The June transfer window was a huge gamble for Manchester United. With visible problems in all lines of the team, the Red Devils’ decided to spend over 200 million pounds and bought three forwards: Matheus Kunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. And after the start of the season, not even this powerful attack is producing enough goals, not to mention the midfield and defense. United’s problems between the posts are evident, but it’s also evident after Andre Onana’s loan departure that the Turkish keeper Altay Bayındır is not the answer. Enter young Belgian talent Senne Lammens, who was signed for 21 million pounds. Needles to say, this move didn’t impress a single United’s legend, including the current Manchester Global Ambassador Peter Schmeichel.
Former Red Devil, who won five Premier League titles with the Old Trafford club (including the Champions League 1998/99) thought (as everybody else) that there were better keepers out there, for about the same amount of money, like Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and PSG’s Gigi Donnarumma.
“We should have signed Emi Martinez. In fact, we should have gone for Gianluigi Donnarumma when we had the chance. With Martinez, everything was lined up and that felt like really good news, because he's exactly the kind of goalkeeper Manchester United should have. As for Lammens, I'll be honest, I'd never heard of him until the link came up. I know his stats are excellent across the top ten European leagues. But that was with Antwerp in Belgium, in a team that finished fifth. Stats don't show how you react after a mistake, or how you cope with the pressure of Manchester United. That pressure is unlike anywhere else in football” said the Dane to SunSport.
Another former Red Devil Paul Scholes was also stunned that United didn’t went for Donnarumma who even reminded him of Schmeichel.
“The Donnarumma one is the biggest mistake that I can see. As soon as that man became available, drive to Paris, go and get him, give him whatever whatever he wants. He could be easily the best goalkeeper in the world… he reminds me of Peter Schmeichel. We can buy a keeper here for 35m to 40 million pounds who we've got for the next 10 years. If Man United were not in the market for Donnarumma when he became available, that's a criminal offence for me. You buy this lad from Belgium. What's he cost 18.2 million pounds. I think that tells you everything about him at this point” he said.
