It's time for Bruno's 300th United game - his wife's words changed everything

The Portuguese midfielder will lead his side against Brighton on Saturday night as he reaches quite a milestone (7.30 pm)

In recent years, the phrase "footballer's wife" has often carried a negative tone - a cliche of luxury, excess, and drama that supposedly ruins careers. But Ana Pinho, wife of Bruno Fernandes, has completely flipped that stereotype on its head.

When Al Hilal arrived a few months ago with a 'galactic' offer worth €800,000 per week, it wasn't Bruno who hesitated. It was Ana who said no.

"The first thing she asked me was, 'Have you achieved everything you wanted here with United?' She knew I hadn't," Bruno told The Times, recalling the moment his wife checkmated him with a single question.

Instead of chasing millions in the Middle East, the Portuguese captain will tonight play his 300th match for Manchester United, against Brighton and Hove Albion (7.30 pm).

"My family feels amazing here. The kids love their school, they even like the weather! Sometimes we say our house in Manchester feels more like home than the one in Portugal. I still have dreams to achieve here - and my wife knows that," he said.

Al Hilal - and other clubs from the region - could have easily signed him. His current deal, valid until 2027, includes a €65 million release clause, a sum they were ready to pay.

"Yes, they were very willing," Bruno confirmed.

But neither United nor coach Ruben Amorim wanted to let him go.

"The manager asked me to stay. He said, 'If we bring in players to help you and then lose you, what's the point?' The club didn't want to sell, and they didn't need the money," Fernandes explained.

Despite rumours, Bruno insists there is no secret agreement about leaving at the end of the season.

"I've seen those stories, but I haven't spoken to anyone. If there's an agreement, it's between clubs, not with me. Even my agent knows - I won't discuss my future until after the World Cup," he clarified.

The United captain admits he still feels unfinished business in Manchester.

"I want people to speak well of me when I leave, but more than that, I want trophies. That's what's missing from my time here. I haven't brought the success I dreamed of. I want people to remember me for titles, not for my stats."
