It’s just started, and Mourinho is already in trouble

The Istanbul club has begun its quest for the long-coveted title, but not in the best fashion. A draw against Goztepe leaves Fenerbahce already trailing their biggest rival

The title was settled under the Galata Tower, and the champion, at the end of the season, threw down the gauntlet to Fenerbahce. Leroy Sane was the first “big signing,” but Istanbul truly shook when Victor Osimhen was acquired for a staggering 75 milion euros. His arrival drew 2,100,000 fans, and the city rival responded, primarily to the German’s signing, with John Duran.

Fenerbahce brought the Colombian in on loan, offering him a net salary of 10 milion euros. He was expected to be a major boost, but he failed to impress in the opening league match. He missed shots, much like the rest of the team during their 0-0 away draw at Goztepe.

The Super Lig has only just begun, and Jose Mourinho is already under simmering pressure. If there are more slip-ups—which a draw against Goztepe certainly qualifies as—the heat in the club will rise. Another season without a title would be deemed a failure for Fenerbahce.

There’s likely to be “scrubbing” in the locker room, as Fenerbahce essentially starts the title race from behind. Galatasaray already has two wins, and the pressure will only mount if they keep racking up Portuguese manager.
