Ajax's much-decorated tactician is on his way to Old Trafford

It looks like the long wait is over and that Manchester United have finally gotten their man. According to ESPN, current Ajax head coach Erik Ten Hag has agreed to become the next Manchester United head coach.

The 52-year-old Dutchman emerged as one of the four candidates to succeed Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford hot seat, alongside Luis Enrique, Julen Lopetegui and Mauricio Pochettino. However, it's the Dutchman who will try to fix the mess that is Manchester United's first team.

United's search of a new manager has been led by football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher, who have reported to chief executive Richard Arnold with joint-chairman Joel Glazer having the final decision on the appointment.

Sources have told ESPN that while some at United considered PSG boss Pochettino, Arnold and Glazer are in agreement that Ten Hag is the best candidate to replace interim manager Rangnick, who has been in charge since last December.

While nothing has been signed just yet, there are strong indications that Ten Hag has already started to plan for his first season at Manchester United. He has identified Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves as his number one transfer target - a player who could dramatically improve the Red Devils' fortunes. The Wolverhampton Wanderers man is keen to test himself with a team competing in the UEFA Champions League - and United seem much closer to than compared to his current employers.
