Three Lions defeated the sturdy Denmark after extra time

Even though they never won a EURO, English like to think of football as their 'baby' and they keep hoping it will 'come home'. After tonight's semi finals match against Denmark, it just might. Final score at Wembley - 2-1 after extra time.

Match opened with England holding the ball more but it did not look like Danish were in danger at all. Strong midfield block in the midfield prevented the English from creating promising chances.

What can be said with certainty is that the start of the match did not lack intensity - players of both teams were constantly showing determination to attack either from positional plays (England) or from counter-attacks (Denmark).

Then - slap bang on the half hour mark, Denmark took the lead. First goal England conceded is one of the prettiest goals scored at the EURO 2020. Sampdoria's Mikkel Damsgaard unleashed a rocket free kick and Jordan Pickford could do nothing about it even though the ball went more towards the middle of the goal then to the side. What a belter!

Damsgaard strike was the first direct free kick goal of the EURO 2020.

But this generation of English national team footballers, opposed to those in the past, showed more maturity when things are not going according to plan. It showed in eight minutes after the conceded goal.

First a huge opportunity for Raheem Sterling who tried from close range but sent the ball directly into Kasper Schmeichel's stomach. Minute later - Three Lions equalized the score. Denmark captain Simon Kjaer suffered a good deal of misfortune as he accidentally put a pass from Arsenal's starboy Bukayo Saka into his own net. It all followed a magnificent splitting pass made by Harry Kane.

Eleventh own goal of the tournament. If one country hosted it, you would wonder if there is something in the water.

Denmark's leading goalscorer of the tournament Kasper Dolberg scored all his three EURO 2020 goals between the 25th and the 50th minute of the match. He showed up a bit early in this game - he had a great opportunity in the 51st minute when Pickford reacted well and stopped his shot (it was later established that Nice's striker was offside before the attempt).

In the 55th minute Harry Maguire caught onto a precise cross from a Mason Mount free kick and produced a header at goal from the penalty spot, but his attempt towards the left side of the target failed to beat Schmeichel, who made a sensational save.

Four minutes later, Dolberg tried again but it wasn't a dangerous effort.

Three Lions started roaring after the 60th minute - they squized the Danes in their own defensive third and created few half-chances.

Wembley exploded in the 74th minute after a commotion in Denmark's box. Mostly English audience yelled for a penalty however it turned out Kane tackled one of the Danish defenders first.

Last ten minutes of regular time passed in both teams cautiously trying not to concede and to calmly welcome extra time. Few attempts from the English were not enough to change such a turn of events.

Kane opened up the first extra time period with a massive opportunity but Schmeichel again imposed himself as one of Danish heroes at this European championship with a brilliant save.

English looked much better after the 90th minute - they pressed the Danes and took several shots from mid-range.

The decisive moment happened in the 103rd minute when Sterling beautifully dribbled past Joakim Maehle and was tackled to earn a penalty for England. Skipper Harry Kane took the penalty, Schmeichel managed to save the initial attempt but then Kane tapped it home from after a lucky rebound came to his feet.

Kane is now England's joint-highest goalscorer in major tournaments (EUROs/World Cup), moving level with Gary Lineker on 10 goals.

Denmark kind of woke up but it was not enough to change the score. Few opportunities came for Sterling & Co but they failed to find the net.

English power through deservedly - they had more of the match and together with Italy, Three Lions showed the most in this tournament.

Finals will be held at Wembley on the 11th of July. England wait for a major trophy since 1966 when they won the World Cup at the old Wembley while Italy have only one EURO title in their cabinets - they defeated Yugoslavia in 1968.
