Former Bayern president states the Munich giant will have to be financially thrifty

It is always busy in Munich. Players and coach leaving (Alaba, Boateng, Martinez, Flick), players and coach arriving (Upamecano, Nagelsmann) - things are happening and after winning the ninth consecutive Bundesliga title - there are reasons to celebrate. However - there are some things to worry about.

As with many great clubs recently, Covid-19 affected the financial power of Bayern. Before, Bavarians could’ve bought anyone, given them anything they wanted. Now? It is not that easy as Bayern are struggling to extend French trophy magnet Kingsley Coman.

Deputy chairman of the club board Uli Hoeness has gone on the record saying that the club will not budge on exorbitant salary demands, Sport1 reports.

“I can only point out that the player still has a two-year contract. We will see everything else. Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic will sort it out. They have the support of the supervisory board with Herbert Hainer. We also managed the Alaba affair well together.” Hoeness said when talking about Coman.

One of the big factors in the equation is that Coman recently hired Pini Zahavi to be his agent - the same man who failed to take Robert Lewandowski to Real Madrid, and succeeded in taking Alaba away from Allianz Arena.

Coman wants more money, media reports make that clear, and what Coman and Zahavi are relying on is Leroy Sane’s huge salary. Unfortunately, Bayern simply do not have that kind of money to go around anymore due to the pandemic. And that element was crucial in the Alaba saga.

“We were simply not ready to pay the price asked for him [Alaba],” said the former Bayern president. While he may not be in charge anymore, Hoeness’ opinion still carried weight at the club.

“This will also be the case in the future,” he continued. “If prices are called that cannot be displayed, then there will be no contract extension with FC Bayern. I have the feeling that the business aspects are not given sufficient consideration by some journalists.”

If you’re Kingsley Coman, after hearing that, you’re pretty much packing your bags.

His goal in the Champions League final last year will keep him in the hearts of Bayern fans for good but the business of football is ruthless and this might just the time to part ways.

There is reported interest for the 24-year-old Frenchman from both Chelsea and Man united - on the open market, Coman could bring up to 7.8 billion KSH.
