Alexander Isak is set to take a major step in his recovery after Liverpool confirmed the striker will return to team training on Thursday.
The Sweden international has been sidelined since December after suffering a serious left ankle injury - including a fibula fracture - during a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. The injury came in the same moment he scored the opening goal, following a challenge from defender Micky van de Ven.
It has been a frustrating first season at Anfield for the 25-year-old, who arrived from Newcastle United in a British-record £125 million transfer. Fitness issues limited his early impact even before the long spell on the sidelines.
But now, with the campaign entering its most decisive phase, Isak's return could not come at a better time.
"He's going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow," head coach Arne Slot said.
"If you work for three or four months to get back, returning to training is great for everyone. We all know the player we signed, an incredible striker. Even if he doesn't start immediately, having him back for the last two months will help us."
Liverpool face a demanding run-in, with FA Cup and UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, while also pushing to secure Champions League qualification through the league.
There could be further good news on the injury front. Mohamed Salah is "very close" to returning after a groin issue, while Federico Chiesa has resumed training after leaving Italy's national camp early.
However, goalkeeper Alisson Becker will remain sidelined for longer, while Jeremie Frimpong is still being assessed after coming off during the Netherlands' draw with Ecuador.
The Reds' attack has lacked a reliable focal point in Isak's absence. Before his injury, the striker had managed just three goals and one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions.
His absence has forced Hugo Ekitike to carry much of the burden up front - often with limited support during congested periods of the season.
Even if Isak initially returns in short bursts from the bench, his presence alone could provide a valuable lift.
For Liverpool, the hope is simple: that the club's record signing might still have a decisive role to play before the season reaches its conclusion.
