The idea is to play a friendly match at Camp Nou
When he signed for Paris Saint Germain in June 2021, Lionel Messi left Barcelona without a proper goodbye. New management came in, led by his old president Juan Laporta, but they were unable to prevent his departure due to the poor financial state left to them by the previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu. So, instead of a proper goodbye, Barca fans only saw tears in Messi’s eyes at the departure press conference. During those two turbulent PSG years, the Argentinian forward always kept Barcelona in the back of his mind, as well as the fans and Laporta. But when the opportunity came again, the two parties couldn’t agree on his comeback (Barcelona lacked money again). So, in 2023, Messi signed for Inter Miami, but the ‘bitter taste’ of his unorganized farewell still remains. And his new owner from America decided to change that.

Jorge Mas, who runs the MLS club alongside David Beckham and Jose Mas, said he has given the Argentinian legend his 'commitment' that he will do 'everything possible' to make it work.
“I gave Messi my commitment that I will do everything possible in the coming years so that he has the opportunity to say goodbye to his fans in Barcelona. Inter Miami will go to Barcelona or we will have some kind of match” said Inter’s co-owner.
And his words are not without foundation. Barcelona's club president Joan Laporta, already talked about a proper farewell for Messi, since it was obvious he wouldn’t come again to Camp Nou as a player. He stated it would be fitting for Messi's tribute to coincide with the opening of the newly revamped Spotify Camp Nou stadium in the 2025-26 campaign. So far, he enjoyed his new club and the league. The Argentinian scored 11 goals in 12 matches this season for the MLS side, who have not lost a game with him while he has been on the pitch.
