Real and Chelsea end the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals with a goal each
Real Madrid are seeking to reach a first Champions League final in three years and they were outright favourites in this tie after four straight clean sheets.
However, Champions League winners in 2012 held strong against Los Blancos in Madrid and are taking an away goal to London. Final score 1-1.
Chelsea's front three of Werner, Pulisic and Mount (Englishman played his 100th match for the Blues) troubled the backline of Real Madrid from the start with their quick-footed transition.
In the 9th minute, Werner managed to do what he did so many times since coming to Chelsea - he missed a colossal opportunity. Mount picked out a wonderful cross for Pulisic who was in acres of space. He decided to head back across goal for Werner who was only six yards out. He should have scored but Courtois made a stunning save with his right foot.
Five minutes later Chelsea converted their early dominance by taking the lead. Rudiger picked Pulisic who ended up 1v1 against Courtois. American took the ball around Courtois and fired it past two men on the line.
Pulisic is the first American player in history to score against Real Madrid in all competitions and the first to score in a UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Conceded goal woke up Real Madrid players. In the 24th minute, incredible Karim Benzema tried with a shot that glazed Edouard Mendy's left post.
And since Chelsea failed to double the lead with numerous chances, Los Blancos punished them in the 29th minute.
A high cross ended up on Militao's head and he sent the ball inside Chelsea's goal box. Benzema caught the ball and showed superb finishing skills from close range to blast it past Mendy.
Karim Benzema has scored his 71st goal in the Champions League, making him the joint-fourth top scorer in the competition’s history (along with Raúl). Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski have now scored more than the Frenchman.
Heavy rain started affecting the game with passes losing precision. But it did not take out of the game, intensity remained at a high level.
Second half started a bit more reserved from both sides. Chelsea seemed content with what they had and Real Madrid looked afraid of the possible counter attacks by the Blues.
Werner and Benzema had a chance each to open the second period but apart from that a completely different approach from the teams opposed to the first 45 minutes.
In the 65th minute, a huge moment for Eden Hazard who came into play against his former club.
Thomas Tuchel introduced Havertz, James and Ziyech to the pitch which brought freshness however it was not utilized. Chelsea took the possession but there was too much caution in their build up and also - Real Madrid pulled back to defend their goal more.
Hakim Ziyech tried with a promising free-kick in the 79th minute but Courtois' positioning on the goal line was superb and he picked up that shot with ease.
In the 87th minute, Varane had a good chance to score after a corner but his shot got deflected from Ben Chilwell's back and went into another corner.
Tactically speaking, a great game by Tuchel and his men. Zidane's side struggled in the beginning to adapt but caught up as the game went by.
