WPL teams will be away to their division one counterparts as FKF Women's Cup begins

Women Premier League (WPL) debutants Ulinzi Starlets and their Zone A counterparts Zetech Sparks will, this weekend, be away in the coastal region as they take on Kilifi’s Moving the Goal-post (MTG) and Mombasa Olympics respectively in the inaugural FKF Women’s Cup.

Set to be played on a knock-out format beginning with the round of 32 scheduled for January 30 and 31, the tournament is bringing together 16 teams from the WPL and a similar number from the division one league. The division one teams host their WPL counterparts in the first round.

Ulinzi, second on the Zone A log at 12 points from four wins in five matches take the long trip to Kilifi where they will be hoping to go past division one’s Zone A third-placed MTG. The latter has picked two wins a loss and a draw for seven points, two behind leaders Kangemi Ladies.

Zetech’s trip to Mombasa is highly likely to take them to the round of 16 as they take on former WPL side Olympics who are struggling in the division one zone A league. Olympics have managed just one win, for three points, in four matches.

Meanwhile, Zone A leaders Thika Queens will be hosted at Camp Toyoyo by division one Zone A’ Mukuru Talent Academy. The Amos Abong’o- coached Mukuru are second on the log at eight points after a four-match unbeaten run.

WPL zone B leaders and league defending champions Vihiga Queens await the outcome of a playoff match between division one zone B sides Bartolimo from Eldoret and Kitale-based Royal Starlets. The latter are third on the nine-team log while the former are eighth. The winner of the playoff set for January 27 will host Vihiga in the round of 32.

Round of 16 is set for February 27 and 28 while quarter-finals will be played between March 27 and 28. The semis take place on April 24 and 25 with the grand finale set for June 1.
