Livramento joins the Magpies 27 years after Faustino Asprilla

Nearly three decades ago, Newcastle United signed one of world football's top talents Faustino Asprilla. The Colombian attacker was swiftly nicknamed Tino by the adoring Geordies as he began his short but impactful career in England. For years, the name Tino was associated with a fantastic Champions League hat-trick in the 3-2 win over Barcelona, among other exploits. In 2023, another Tino arrived at St James' Park to shine in the Champions League.

Tino Livramento's transfer to Newcastle United from Southampton has been finalized, marking Eddie Howe's third big signing ahead of the historic UCL campaign. The agreement, reportedly nearing the $38 million range, has brought the full-back from Southampton to the northeast of England on a five-year contract. This move comes after a lengthy series of negotiations spanned over a month. Livramento was in the stands for Newcastle's friendlies against Fiorentina and Villarreal over the past weekend and watched his new teammates in action.

Livramento's inclusion will bolster Newcastle's options at full-back, as he is considered an excellent backup for Kieran Trippier in the immediate term. The departure of Harrison Ashby on loan to Swansea City prompted Howe to enter the market for an additional right-back.

"The way the manager plays football is really attractive and I feel like it suits me as a player. And with how well the team did last season, the trajectory that we're on now, I'm just looking forward to being a part of that. And to be able to learn from Kieran Trippier is another big thing for me; hopefully he teaches me how to become a better player and a better full-back."

Born in Croydon, Livramento began his journey in the football world at Chelsea during his schoolboy years. In August 2021, he made a permanent move to Southampton, which took place without him making a senior appearance during his time at Stamford Bridge. Although his mother is Scottish and his father Portuguese, Livramento has showcased his talents for England's national team from the U16 level onwards. Among his fellow international teammates are current Magpies players Elliot Anderson and Matty Bondswell. Two of his five U21 caps earned so far have seen him play alongside another Newcastle star, Anthony Gordon.

Manager Eddie Howe spoke several times about the club's need to increase the number of quality players to his squad.

"Tino is a very talented young player with an exciting future ahead of him, so we are delighted to sign him. At 20, he already has lots of attributes that I admire but he also has the potential and drive to really grow with this team. I'm looking forward to working with him and to seeing him develop in a Newcastle shirt."

In January 1996, Tino Asprilla arrived in Newcastle wearing a sheepskin coat. And the club acknowledged the link by posting an illustration where Tino Livramento is wearing the same attire. He may not be a goalscorer by trade, but he can offer a lot to the Magpies.
