If you can’t beat Wolves….

After two shocking defeats, the Citizens must win at all costs against the last team in the Premier League

What a terrible week for Manchester City. First, they lost to rivals Manchester United and then to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League. It’s tough to decide which of those defeats was worse. They lost to their arch-rivals who were unable to defeat clubs like Wolves and Burnley, but smashed highly-paid team with an elite manager 2-0 (and it could have been even more). And then after making a mistake and changing 10 players in the Champions League against Leverkusen, which resulted in a loss and complicated City’s Top 8 finish, Guardiola allowed another defeat, this one even more humiliating, against a Norwegian club. This puts him in a very difficult position next Wednesday in the last round of the group phase, as he must win at home against Galatasary and wait for other results in order to avoid playing play-offs again. So, a today’s game with last placed Wolverhampton is a must win (to say at least).

Manchester City does have injury problems, but just like Tottenham, they need to win regardless, as they have enough money to buy players not looking at PSR rules. After all, it was Manchester who spent the most so far in January, paying Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi 95 million euros combined, not including their enormous wages. Both players will start the game today, as the Citizens have injury crisis mainly in defense and Semenyo was rested as he is not registered to play in the Champions League. Unlike him, Rodri played against Bodo/Glimt but will start today regardless, since he won’t be able to help his team against Galatasaray, considering he got the red card in Norway and is suspended. Off course, Erling Haaland will start but the City’s striker must deliver finally, as he managed only one goal in six games in all competition in 2026.
