In a week in which they will likely be deciding the Premier League title against Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side must first clear the opening hurdle — Sporting Lisbon

League Cup final – defeat to Manchester City. FA Cup quarter-final – defeat to Southampton. On top of that, a setback against Bournemouth at the Emirates. These are the kinds of matches that teams aiming for a title simply cannot afford to lose.

Arsenal have been waiting over two decades for a league title, and what once looked like a season of dreams and a possible four-trophy haul has now been reduced to just two competitions.

The list has been narrowed down to two: the Champions League and the Premier League. This week could prove decisive for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, with two major fixtures coming within a few days of each other — the first against Sporting Lisbon tonight.

Arsenal return to London with a one-goal advantage from the first leg in Lisbon, thanks to a late strike from Kai Havertz. It’s not an unassailable lead, and following their recent slump — three defeats in their last four matches in all competitions — confidence has taken a hit.

Still, Arteta remains firmly optimistic. “Fire! I'm on fire! That's it. Nothing else. I'm dreaming so much,” Arteta said, continuing at length: "I've done so much to be in this position. Because I know how this club was. I've done so much against anything that I just see beauty, opportunity. I want to get it done who have been on this journey with us. They deserve it, it's unbelievable. I had fear when: if we don't get this done, I don't know what happens to the club. Now? It's just purpose, fire, direction." He had no doubts about one thing: this is the biggest opportunity of his managerial career.

Arsenal can reach the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season by avoiding defeat against Sporting.

Arsenal have struggled for consistency throughout 2026 so far, but their Champions League record at the Emirates remains outstanding. They were also underwhelming in the first leg of their round of 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen before turning things around in London to progress comfortably. Fans will be hoping for a smooth passage into the semi-finals on Wednesday, though given recent form, that outcome feels far from certain.
