If only Manchester were Lisbon… Bernardo Silva's silent goodbye

The Portuguese magician hints at departure as life beyond football pulls him away from Manchester City

Big names will always tempt Saudi Arabia. But not all of them are ready to go.

Bernardo Silva might be one of those. With his contract at Manchester City expiring this year, the 31-year-old is suddenly one of the most attractive free agents on the market. And while the Middle East circles, Europe watches closely - especially Juventus, a club that has built a reputation on seizing proven stars without transfer fees.

Silva fits the profile perfectly.

Nine years in England, countless trophies, the peak of his career reached in sky blue. And yet, beneath all the success, there has always been a quiet sense that something never fully clicked.

He admitted as much in Manchester City's official podcast.

Of course, the headlines focused on the obvious - his joy at staying long enough to win the treble in 2023. But between the lines, there was something more telling. Something closer to a goodbye.

"Culturally, Portugal and England are very different," Silva said. "The weather, the food, the lifestyle… everything. I always joke that if Manchester were a bit further south in Europe, I'd stay here until they kicked me out. Because I truly love this football club."

But life, as he made clear, does not end there.

"There's another side to it. I'm not saying I don't like it, but culturally it's not exactly what I would choose in an ideal world. There were moments when I wasn't as happy as I would have liked. Before I met my wife, I spent some time alone in Manchester and even thought about leaving."

He didn't, after all, and it's hard to argue with that decision. He has made 449 appearances, won six Premier League titles, and a Champions League crown. A place in one of the most dominant teams English football has ever seen. Silva knows it too...

"I'm glad I stayed. Otherwise, I would have missed those incredible memories - The Treble, four titles in a row, wearing the captain's armband…"

Then comes the line that says everything without saying too much:

"If Manchester City were in Lisbon, I'd stay until I was 40."

It's not about football anymore. At least, not entirely...

Benfica are waiting in the background, hoping for a romantic return. Inter Miami have made their call. Juventus, for now, feels like the most concrete option.

Silva, meanwhile, sounds at peace, even confident about what he leaves behind.

"I see the same ambition in the new players. They understand the standards now. If you want to be part of this club, you have to be a winner."
