Milan technical director Paolo Maldini calls for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to sign a contract extension with AC Milan as soon as possible

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is ageing like a fine wine. He is a true leader of the Milan club, who find themselves top of Serie A after too many years of mediocracy. Now the legendary Paolo Maldini wants to ensure Ibrahimovic is at the club beyond June.

“We are one of the youngest teams in Europe and we need a leader like Ibrahimović. We tried to sign him in 2018 when he was still playing for LA Galaxy, but we were forced to wait a little longer to get him back at the club."

The Rossoneri are pressed to extend contracts of their star players Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu who will become free agents in a few months’ time if they fail to agree on terms at San Siro. Unlike two of them, Ibrahimović has no desire to even consider playing for another club, but he notified Maldini that won’t rush into a new deal unless he’s confident in his own fitness.

“He’s told us that the contract extension depends on his body, but if he carries on like this, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be continuing. We have three players with expiring contracts in 2022, we are working. There must be to parties happy to continue together, footballers are professional who only think about the pitch, we hope we are going to reach agreements soon.”

Zlatan will be 40 years old in October, but you wouldn’t consider him past it based on his displays for Milan this season. Their head coach Stefano Pioli sees Zlatan as a perfect fit for his side. The Swede’s experience in winning trophies may prove crucial when the title race reaches its climax.

“He will decide the future, but for what he is showing I think it is right that he continues and that he does it with us. It’s difficult to maintain what he is doing because he scores two goals every time he plays. That’s Ibra. He has helped us so much and is helping the team to grow.”

The nomadic striker has already notched 16 goals in 17 matches this season.
