Three years ago, he was stripped of the captain's armband at Old Trafford. Today, Maguire extended his contract
Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, with the option to extend for a further season - a move that underlines his unlikely resurgence at Old Trafford.
Once facing an uncertain future, the 33-year-old centre-back now looks set to extend his stay beyond eight years at the club he joined in 2019 from Leicester City for a then world-record £80m fee for a defender.
Maguire has since made 266 appearances for United, lifting the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup a year later. But his journey has been anything but smooth.

Handed the captaincy just months after arriving by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire quickly became one of the most scrutinised figures at the club. Criticism followed him through multiple managerial eras, and in 2023, he was stripped of the armband under Erik ten Hag, with a move to West Ham agreed, only for the defender to reject the transfer and fight for his place.
That decision now looks vindicated.
After struggling for minutes earlier in the season, Maguire has enjoyed a revival under interim boss Michael Carrick, starting every match since mid-January and re-establishing himself as a key figure in the squad.
"Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour," Maguire said. "I'm proud to continue this journey and create more moments with our supporters."
United's hierarchy sees more than just form. Director of football Jason Wilcox praised his mentality, leadership, and experience - qualities that have grown in importance as the squad evolves.
Maguire's United story has often been defined by criticism - his limitations highlighted more than his strengths. But inside the club, his composure, physicality, and resilience have always carried weight.
He may no longer be the undisputed figure he once was, but his importance has quietly endured.
And now, after years of turbulence, setbacks, and doubt, Maguire's Old Trafford chapter isn't ending just yet - it's being rewritten.
