This year’s tournament was initially scheduled for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, but was later moved to Nairobi.
Kenya is yet to confirm whether it will host this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers, scheduled for September 4–16 in Nairobi.
The situation is causing concern at the regional body, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), as time is quickly running out.
“Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has not engaged with the Ministry of Sports to get the needed guarantees. There is no communication at all, and time is running out fast,” said our source, who asked not to be named.
The source added, “It would be catastrophic if Kenya does not confirm hosting the tournament, as they would be denying their representative an opportunity to play at home.”
Now in its fourth edition, the tournament is fully sponsored by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
However, FKF President Hussein Mohammed said there is no need for panic, as the federation is aware of the tournament.
“The processes are ongoing, and soon we shall have a hosting agreement and confirm in due course,” he said when contacted.
The regional event will feature eight top women’s club teams vying for a single ticket to the continental finals.
If it goes ahead in Kenya, this will be the second time the nation hosts it, after the inaugural edition in 2021, where Vihiga Queens emerged champions.
This year’s tournament was initially scheduled for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, but was later moved to Nairobi.
Representing Kenya will be Kenya Police Bullets FC, the reigning national champions. Bullets finished runners-up to Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank during last year’s tournament and will be hoping to capitalize on home-ground advantage to advance to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Other teams set to participate include CBE FC (Ethiopia), Yei Joint Stars (South Sudan), JKT Queens (Tanzania), Kampala Queens (Uganda), Rayon Sports Women FC (Rwanda), JKU Princesses (Zanzibar), and Top Girls Academy (Burundi).
