One of the biggest, and perhaps most bizarre superstitions is the one linked to Aaron Ramsey: he scores a goal, and a famous person dies. It still works

Football has always had its myths and superstitions, but none are quite as unsettling as the so-called “Aaron Ramsey Curse.” The Welsh midfielder, now playing for UNAM Pumas in Mexico, is still haunted by the bizarre reputation that whenever he scores a goal, a famous public figure soon passes away.

The legend began in his Arsenal days, when fans and journalists started noticing a pattern that was too strange to ignore. Back in May 2011, Ramsey found the net against Manchester United, and just a day later came the news of Osama bin Laden’s death.

A few months after that, in October, he scored against Tottenham, followed almost immediately by the passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Then, in February 2012, he struck again in a match against Sunderland, only for Whitney Houston to tragically die shortly after.

The sequence continued in eerie fashion. In November 2013, Ramsey scored against Cardiff, and actor Paul Walker lost his life in a car crash soon after. The following summer, in August 2014, his goal against Manchester City was overshadowed the next day by the death of comedian Robin Williams.

The curse seemed to peak in early 2016, when within the span of just days Ramsey’s goals coincided first with the death of music legend David Bowie, and then with the loss of beloved actor Alan Rickman. Later, in 2019, Ramsey’s Europa League goal was followed by the shocking passing of Keith Flint, frontman of The Prodigy.

And now, in 2025, the story has resurfaced yet again. After Ramsey scored for UNAM Pumas, news broke of the death of iconic Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, reviving the old fears and headlines.

Of course, reason tells us this is nothing more than a coincidence. Deaths of celebrities sadly occur with regularity, and Ramsey—an accomplished midfielder—is bound to score from time to time. Yet the number of eerie links over the years has been enough to make the “curse” a permanent part of football folklore.

Ramsey himself has always laughed off the superstition, insisting it’s pure chance. But for fans, every time the Welshman celebrates a goal, there’s a shiver of unease—and the question no one can quite shake: who will be next?
