The Bavarians' all-time record holder will join the Vancouver Whitecaps FC after 17 years with the German giants
The wait is over - legendary German forward Thomas Muller has officially signed with MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, committing to the Canadian club through the end of the 2026 season.
Rumors about Muller's move to the MLS had been swirling ever since Bayern Munich informed him they would not be renewing his contract. The only question that remained was: which city would he choose?
Bayern, criticized for not allowing the 35-year-old veteran to end his career where it began, attempted to make amends by arranging a transfer to their affiliate club, Los Angeles FC. However, Muller reportedly turned down the move - out of spite, according to some sources - sending a clear message that his farewell with the Bavarian giants was anything but smooth, despite the club's attempts in recent months to portray it as amicable.
His refusal to head to California threw a wrench into the plans and prolonged negotiations, opening the door for Vancouver to swoop in and hijack the deal - right from under the nose of FC Cincinnati.
The final obstacle was a compensation fee owed to Cincinnati, the franchise that initially filed the rights for Muller under MLS rules. To resolve the matter, the Whitecaps paid €400,000 to the Ohio-based club, clearing the path for the German icon to put pen to paper.
With that, Muller embarks on a new chapter - far from Munich, but still very much in the spotlight.
