Kenya took on DRC on Sunday, 3 August in what was the country's maiden appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a memorable debut that saw Harambee Stars emerge as 1-0 victors.
The all-important goal was scored by Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo, who dribbled past the Congo defense to slot home in the second minute of first-half added time.
With the win secured, each player banked Ksh1 million as a reward for every CHAN victory registered as promised by President Ruto before the tournament.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the match at the mixed zone, the Ulinzi Stars captain admitted that the financial token gave the team an extra push.
“Money is a reward for something worked for. We worked hard for the win, and that is why we qualified for the Ksh1 million. Of course, it was a great motivation and pushed us further to claim victory,” said Muchiri.
The award, which was later extended to cover the 15 members of the technical bench, brought the grand total to Ksh42 million, which has since been disbursed by the Head of State through the Ministry of Sports.
The former Tusker FC winger came on in the second half and went on to open up on his preparedness for the DR Congo match despite starting from the bench.
“I had to stay focused throughout the game and be ready when given the chance, and I am glad I made an impact.
We now need to build on the momentum gained from the match to push us in our subsequent games,” he stated.
The former Sony Sugar FC man also spoke on the request by captain Abud Omar to the President, asking for Muchiri’s promotion in the military.
“All I can say is that I leave everything to God as it is beyond me, and let's see what happens after the tournament.”
