Sociedad B took on Zaragoza in a La Liga 2 match played on Sunday, 17 August at the Zubieta Real Sociedad Stadium, with Sociedad securing a 1-0 victory.
The lone goal was scored by Kenyan winger Ochieng in the 35th minute from a Gorka Gorosabel assist to mark a historic start to Sociedad’s life in La Liga 2.
Sociedad were playing the first match in La Liga 2 after gaining promotion from the Primera RFEF, where they won their playoff match against Gimnastic.
Sociedad looked the most lively side from the first whistle and almost took the lead in the 16th minute, but Adrian Rodriguez in the Zaragoza goal made a save on his bottom right corner.
However, Rodriguez was helpless in the 35th minute when Zaragoza lost the ball on attack, and from a quick counterattack, Gorosabel put Ochieng through on goal from the middle of the pitch.
With speed and plenty of space, Ochieng found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who was now off his line to narrow the angle.
In an audacious manner, the Kenyan chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give his side a lead that they not only took to halftime but also protected until the final whistle.
The journey to La Liga 2 has not been rosy for Ochieng, though. The 22-year-old moved to Spain at the age of 17 to a school in Gran Canaria that trained promising young talents.
However, the move involved a monthly expense of €1,200 (approximately Ksh180,000) in living expenses, which was catered for by family, friends, and relatives.
A delay in payment saw Ochieng kicked out by the nursing home hosting him to the streets at one point.
However, he managed to overcome the setback and eventually signed for Maspalomas, where he played for three seasons before Sociedad signed him as a 19-year-old in July 2023.
