The former Tusker FC, Bandari FC, Posta Rangers, KCB FC, and Mathare United shot-stopper is currently the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for both Kenya and Gor Mahia.
Omondi impressed during the CHAN tournament in August, earning widespread praise for his performances between the posts. His exploits saw him recognized by President William Ruto during the Mashujaa Day celebrations earlier this month.
He recently sealed a move to Gor Mahia from Bandari FC, signing a two-year contract, a deal that capped off his steady rise to becoming one of the country’s top goalkeepers. But the 28-year-old insists his journey is far from over.
“My dream remains to play outside Africa,” Omondi told Telecomasia.net. “The good thing about being a goalkeeper is that we can play well into advanced ages.
I am 28 at the moment, and I know I still have many years left in me. I want to achieve that dream, and I will work hard and push myself to make it a reality.”
Omondi also has his sights set on representing Harambee Stars at the 2027 AFCON, which Kenya is set to co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
Having been Kenya’s first-choice goalkeeper during CHAN, he says his focus is now on maintaining form and fitness to earn selection for the continental showpiece.
“The long-term goal with the national team is the AFCON in 2027, which we will be hosting. It’s just two years away, and my dream is to make that squad. I am pushing myself every day to stay in shape and maintain my form so that I can fight for a place in the team,” he said.
Playing at AFCON, he added, would be a dream come true, an opportunity to make more memories in front of home fans.
“Just like CHAN, it would be an honour to play on such a big stage on home soil. I can’t say I will start preparing for it next year; I’ve already started now. I want to be there to make more history and more memories,” he concluded.
Omondi has started the new season strongly for Gor Mahia, keeping three clean sheets in his first three matches, further cementing his place as one of Kenya’s most reliable goalkeepers.
