Ababu Namwamba has disclosed plans for Harambee Starlets to camp in Europe to intensify preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations that is set to be played in Morocco mid next year

The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Ababu Namwamba has revealed that plans are underway to ensure the Kenya Women’s National team, Harambee Starlets, camps in Europe as part of its preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Harambee Starlets takes on Botswana in a crunch qualifier on Wednesday from 3PM EAT at the Nyayo National Stadium and Ababu is convinced the Kenyan girls have what it takes to edge their opponents and eventually qualify for WAFCON.

“Qualifying for WAFCON will be a major success story and the Government of Kenya will support every efforts to prepare the team for the tournament. This means securing and supporting high level friendlies while working hand in hand with the federation and planning high level training camps. Plans are underway for the team to camp in a top European nation,” Ababu revealed while speaking to the media after Starlets last training session ahead of the game against Botswana.

“The Government has done well in supporting the team ahead of this game (against Botswana) including facilitating the release of Sheryl Angechi from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) training to join the other girls in training and I am convinced they (Starlets) will put in a good shift. They face an incredibly strong opponent but in the end it is 11 versus 11. I urge Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to cheer our girls, they need the support.” He added.

Ababu also confirmed that the girls will received Ksh 2.5 Million from his ministry if they beat Botswana.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa echoed Ababu sentiments saying; “We (FKF) have prepared the team well and even brought in several foreign-based players to join the team. We value women football and have done incredibly well on that front. The gates will be open very early and entrance is free. The girls really need the support and I hope Kenyans will turn out in large numbers.”

The WAFCON will be held in Morocco mid next year.
