Akida’s return was announced by Kibera Soccer on Monday, 13 October, through their Facebook page.
“We are thrilled to announce the signing of legendary lethal striker Esse Akida. She has graced pitches across borders, broken through defenses like wind through grass, and left a trail of goals wherever she’s played. Now, she is here to roar with pride,” read a post by the FKF Cup champions.
The Besiktas Women forward also took to her social media handles to shed light on her return to the local scene.
“My dream has always been to play football until I can no longer play. After a tough period of juggling the health of my old man and my career, I feel I'm in a good mental space to continue again.
I'm really happy to join Kibera Soccer Women FC and to be back playing in the Kenyan Women's Premier League. This is the space I want to be in contributing to football in this country,” she posted.
The former Ramat HaSharon player went ahead to disclose why she settled on the FKF Cup champions from the pool of clubs that were interested in her services.
“This is more special because I am reuniting with Coach George Robert Okallo, someone who has played a big role in my football journey and truly understands my game.
I am excited about what this team is building and the ambition the club has. I believe we can achieve great things together,” she explained.
Acknowledging her influence in women's football in the country, Akida, who returns to the local scene seven years after leaving Thika Queens, also opened up on her mentorship role.
“For me, this is also a chance to inspire young girls who dream of playing football and making a career out of it.
This is another chance to show them that with hard work and belief, anything is possible. I can't wait to get started, to wear the Kibera colors, and to give my all for the team and the fans who have shown me love all over the years,” she added..
