The big Nairobi City Stars defender remains confident of helping the team win the final match of the season and survive relegation

Nairobi City Stars defender Salim Hamisi has lifted the lid on the club's underwhelming campaign, pointing to the lack of character and mental resilience as the primary factors behind their prolonged struggles in the FKF Premier League.

The experienced centre-back, who joined Simba wa Nairobi from Kakamega Homeboyz during the mid-season transfer window, believes that the team’s inability to respond positively in adverse situations has been their greatest undoing.

“The major challenge has been the low self-esteem and lack of character, especially when we conceded first. We often struggled to turn games in our favour after going behind. That has been a major stumbling block and explains the results we've endured this season,” said Hamisi.

City Stars have endured a season marred by inconsistency, managing just five wins, ten draws, and suffering fifteen defeats.

The disappointing run has seen the Kawangware-based outfit sit at the bottom position of the 18-team table for the better part of the campaign.

However, a recent upturn in form has injected hope into their relegation survival bid.

A hard-fought 2-1 win over KCB last weekend, coupled with a valuable draw against FC Talanta and a stunning victory over defending champions Gor Mahia weeks ago, has seen Salim Babu’s charges climb to 16th position — their highest placement all season.

Hamisi, who has brought stability to the backline since his arrival, remains optimistic that City Stars can pull off a great escape with a strong finish.

“We are working hard to keep the team afloat. Hopefully, we can finish above the play-off spot and avoid the relegation trap door. It’s been a tough season, but we are determined to end it on a high,” he added.

City Stars will face Mathare United in their final match of the season, knowing that a win could secure their top-flight status and complete one of the most dramatic survival stories of the campaign.
